With Paul Leigh, Gill Page and singer Richard de Winter
Follow the history of Norman Richmond in this programme of music from the 11th and 12th centuries.
Their programme takes in music of the Saxon and Norman church, the songs of the (fairly local!) St Godric, music from Norman Sicily, and music of the troubadours and trouveres, mixed in with a touch of storytelling to set this wonderful music in its context. Everything is performed on authentic period instruments – including medieval harps, the early medieval lute, the early psaltery, tuned bells, plus an amazing variety of flutes and whistles.
Trouvere are based in Richmondshire and have been researching, recording and recreating the music of the middle ages for over twenty years. The period of the Normans and Saxons has been our research focus over the last couple of years, so we are delighted to bring it all together in this performance for Richmond 950.

Paul Leigh studied music at Ripon before founding Trouvere in 1998. He is a flute and guitar player by training and now plays all manner of medieval flutes and whistles, the medieal lute, gittern and citole, the psaltery – plus medieval bagpipes for impact. He edits the original musical sources used by Trouvere, and has a curious but abiding passion for medieval musical theory...
Gill Page studied medieval history before becoming a minstrel. She is the history nerd in Trouvere and edits the literary sources used by Trouvere; she plays medieval harp and symphony (the ancestor of the hurdy gurdy) and sings. She’s also an accomplished storyteller. Gill is the Director of Medieval Music in the Dales, the UK’s only festival of medieval music, based here in Richmondshire.
Richard de Winter is a highly experienced choral singer who studied Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music. He’s also an accomplished actor, who recently performed as Geoffrey Chaucer in a tour around Spain! Richard is the choirmaster for Medieval Music in the Dales, where he is a really popuar workshop leader for all things vocal. He sings regularly with Trouvere, and with renaissance specialists Passamezzo.
